Moving day approaches and you've come to realize you haven't taken the proper measures to make sure you’re prepared for the movers.

Did you do enough research on the movers you're getting quotes from? Have they all ready asked for your payment information?

Moving day is all about you and its understandable if at times you've forgotten that movers are people too. They lift heavy things and get hungry and thirsty just like anyone else.

Just by having a couple of bottles of water or some cold sandwiches lying around the house for them will not only brighten their day but it'll make them happier to help you, only leading to a better move of all your possessions.
Moving day can be pretty traumatic if you’re not prepared. If you’re expecting the movers to make executive decisions regarding your own personal belongings, your move could be on the highway to hell. Take some steps to be prepared so the movers won’t be out of control while they’re in your soon-to-be-old home, make a moving checklist.

Moving Supplies: Make sure you have enough boxes and tape for your things to be packaged carefully. Label all the boxes appropriately, i.e., “bathroom materials” and so the movers can go on to execute the perfect pick-up from your old home to the drop-off in your new home. This way the movers know exactly where to go with the designated boxes and you won’t be lugging a box of bathroom supplies from the living room to your bathroom. Probably the most frequently asked question is “If I hire a good, reputable moving company like New York Movers why do I need insurance?” The answer is, for the same reason excellent drivers still need to have car insurance – because regardless of how careful you are, the possibility of damage still exists.

The following options are available on the move day for shipments valued up to $50,000.00. In the event your shipment is valued above $50,000.00 and/or contains artwork/items of extraordinary value/items individually valued at more than $5,000.00, please advise your project manager (see option 3 below). You will need a separate application for full replacement value coverage. This coverage needs to be obtained prior to the actual move day. If you have a homeowner or renters policy, your goods may be covered while being moved, however, please check with your agent or carrier prior to the move.

Option 1: $ .30 (thirty cents) per pound per article valuation.
This is provided by New York Movers at no cost to the customer. In the event of loss or damage, the total amount you will be entitled to recover is $.30 per pound per article. For example, if a lamp that weighs ten (10) pound is damaged, the most you can recover is $3.00, regardless of the value of the lamp. This ordinarily does not provide protection for your goods. Written Binding Estimates provide $.60 per pound per article valuation.

Option 2: Additional Valuation
If you wish to be paid depreciated value for lost or damaged items, you must declare a lump sum value for the entire shipment and pay an extra charge (50 cents per $100 valuation) depending on the value of declaration. For example, if the entire shipment is valued at $6,000.00, the additional cost would be $30.

Option 3: Full Replacement Value Insurance
We recommend two insurance companies that offer full replacement value moving insurance direct to the shipper. Baker International and Moving Insurance.com. Full replacement coverage is more comprehensive coverage than valuation, and generally offers more options (deductible levels, higher coverage). This coverage option is a bit more involved, and needs to be obtained prior to the actual move day.

Certificate of Insurance
New York Movers maintains in excess of five million dollars worth of General Liability insurance, as well as required Disability and Worker's Compensation insurance coverage. Nearly every residential building with an elevator will require insurance certificates prior to any work performed on the premises. The amount of insurance a company carries is an important factor when choosing a mover; should your current or future building require more than the mover is covered for, the building will not allow them to work in the building. We maintain a substantial amount of insurance for our client's peace of mind.

Don't forget - moving is the best time to think about homeowner's, apartment renter's, office content and loss of business insurance. This type of coverage will protect your belongings after you move into your new space against the unthinkable - things like fire and theft. This coverage is generally not nearly as expensive as you may think, and is normally very comprehensive. If you are not already insured and do not utilize an insurance broker, we can introduce you to a few reliable professionals that can help you determine your needs, and obtain the coverage to best suit those needs.

Yes we offer packing and unpacking service. If you schedule packing and/or unpacking service with us we also can provide boxes, packing materials, wardrobe boxes and all other specialty packaging for your items. Please remember that for medium to large homes, apartments and offices if you require packing, you should plan to have that service at least one day prior to your moving service.
“Can the movers disassemble and reassemble some of my furniture items?
Yes, for a nominal fee we can disassemble certain items prior to moving the item and then reassemble them for you. The most common items include headboards and footboards from beds, mirrors that are attached to dressers, multi piece desks, etc. We can provide disassembly and reassembly service for most household and office furniture items. Please contact us concerning your requirements. There is no extra charge for removing the mattress and box spring from standard bed frames and then setting up the bed at your new location. Please advice us of your disassembly and reassembly requirements when you obtain your quote from us.
“How will you move my clothes?”
We move clothes in two ways. First is what is called “clothes per foot.” For this procedure, we wrap a quantity of your hanging clothes in large sheets that we provide. We also rent or sell wardrobe boxes for transport of hanging clothes. Folded clothes from armoires should be boxed in standard moving boxes. If you choose not to leave clothing items in dressers and chest of drawers you should place them in standard moving boxes.
“Will the movers place my furniture where I want it at my new location?”
Yes, when the movers bring each furniture item in from the vehicle they will place the items exactly where you ask them to. The movers will also place all of your boxes in the designated room that is marked on the box or where you direct them to.

Along with standard moving style box trucks we utilize a fleet of 17 custom built enclosed moving trailers ranging in length from 14’ to 40’. The interior walls of the trailers are fully carpeted to add additional protection for your items. All of our trucks and trailers are fully stocked with all of the equipment to safely move your items, including two and four wheel dollies, moving pads, e-track straps, ratchet straps, bungees, specialty moving rubber bands and other required items and tools. For moving of specialty items we utilize item specific equipment such as safe dollies, large appliance dollies and pallet jacks.
“I have items at my current residence and some other items at a storage facility, can you stop and pickup my items at the storage facility?”
Yes, we can make one or more additional stops to either pick up or drop off items for you in between your initial location and your final location. Please just let us know your requirements when you obtain your quote from us.

Cartons are stacked when moved; therefore, please don’t over pack them. Flat tops on cartons will speed the move. Tag boxes on both ends. Do not tag cartons on top! All packing should be completed prior to the start of the actual move. Be sure that all cartons are properly assembled. Leave a two inch space on top of each carton. Personal items

Desks, credenzas and storage cabinets are moved on end. Unless the contents of these items are completely emptied and packed into cartons the contents will fall out and be lost. Pack all contents. This includes current working papers, letter trays, books and other desk top items. Important: seal paper cups, pencils and all other loose materials in envelopes and then pack them in cartons. Protect all glass receptacles with paper or other stuffing. Leave glass tops and pads on top of desks for the mover to handle. Desks and credenzas
are tagged on the top surface. Chairs are tagged on the back rest.

Photocopy machines
Photocopy machines need to be serviced by the manufacturer or service contract agent before being moved. Failure to do so may void your machine’s service contract or warranty. Bookcases and storage cabinets

Employees Consolidating: Consolidate your office belongings with those of other employees being located in your immediate area at the new location. This will help conserve carton space. Electronic and Telephone Service Equipment: Utility servicemen will have been notified in advance of this move. Remember, telephone servicemen are required to disconnect phones secured to desks.

Routing within your buildings
Building management services should be made aware of the move in advance. Loading, unloading areas, entrances, exits and loading docks must be made available to the movers exclusively. Reserving all elevators for the exclusive use of the mover will save time (which will save you money).

A pre-move conference will help clarify responsibilities
Prior to each move, we recommend that a pre-move meeting be conducted between each of your department heads and the Remarkable Movers - NYC Moving Company project managers. The process of coding floor plans is the first step in developing a logical move plan. The strategy is to prepare the move to flow in a logical and fluid manner. Every item to be moved must be identified and labeled so that it may be placed by the mover in it’s exact destination location. A tag also instructs a mover how to handle that item, for example:
• Location (where the item goes) • Sequence (one color may proceed another)
• Liquidation (directive to mover) • Do not move (directive to the mover)
• Storage (directive to the mover) • Contents (directive to the unpacker)
Placement of furniture and equipment at your new facility will be identified by number, not by name. When coding the floor plan each person and each area being moved must be identified with a single room or area number. To identify placement location, placards with the proper room numbers must be affixed to the entrance of each individual area and/or room at your new facility. Everything must be tagged! For example; when a desk has a removable return, both pieces are tagged. Each piece of computer equipment is tagged (i.e.: monitor, CPU, keyboard and cable bundle). Everything must be
tagged no matter how seemingly inconsequential (i.e.: floor mats, white boards, trash cans, etc...). Items without a tag will not be moved. This great level of detail means less supervision will be required at your new facility (remember; the mover’s time is your money). An example of our method for indicating placements at destination is shown on the left. Each individual item is assigned a number which corresponds to its place on the floor plan. In this example the employee’s room/area number is 15. A dash (“-“) is placed after the number and each individual piece of furniture is assigned a numbered location which corresponds to the number shown on your floor plan. Proper tagging and placarding will be a key factor in achieving an organized and smooth-flowing move. It will save your company time and money.

Moving computer and desktop equipment
Computer equipment must be disconnected by your company. Hard disk drives should be backed up prior to the move. Service, warranty or leasing agents must be notified that you intend to move the equipment. Do not pack these machines. Leave the machines on top of their desk or stand. Typewriter carriages must be centered. All machines must be unfastened and disconnected. Pads and covers for machines should be placed in a carton. If secured, remove these items from the wall. Tag each piece according to Tagging Instructions; place them on end, back-to-back in mover supplied picture cartons. If the item does not fit in a carton, lean it against the wall and the mover will take it from there. Consolidate small pictures in a single carton. Cushion with packing material, such as newspaper.

Keys and locks

3. Set ground rules. If you've never held a family meeting, set some ground rules, rules that everyone can agree to. A few general things you need to know about packing:
Keep boxes to 50 lbs or less. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in big boxes.
Pack non-breakables tightly in smaller boxes, so they’re not too heavy.
Buy clean newsprint to wrap items, and bubble wrap for padding.
Pack breakables loosely in plastic storage bins with lots of bubble wrap.
Rent furniture pads.
Mark your boxes by room, so you know exactly where everything goes. Color coding or using a number system works great (i.e., red stickers for bedroom or 1 for bathroom.)
Write “FRAGILE” on all boxes with breakables and stack these boxes on top.
Packing the big things
Beds: Tie bed frames together with tape or rope. Then label the pieces so they’re easy to reassemble.Bureaus: Fill drawers with clothes or fragile, well-wrapped items. Cover with a blanket or furniture pads and rope securely.Tables: Remove legs, pad and tie together. Put nuts and bolts in a bag and tape under tabletop.Big appliances: Empty, defrost and drain the fridge, freezer and dishwasher. Clean the interiors and put accessories in bags. Packing Record Albums (I am aging myself!). Pack record albums vertically, rather than flat.
Favorite, if not the most important, items: Pack a box with toilet paper, coffee (and pot), soap, flashlight, screwdriver, can opener, paper plates, cups, and utensils, Load it last so that it will be unloaded first. The microwave should also be the first appliance to come off the truck!
Remove bulbs before packing your lamps. Believe it or not, forgetting to do this is very common.
Have plants? Moving across state lines? Check to see if you can take your plants across state lines. Some states, especially CA are very strict about what comes in. Think fruit flys here! Many prize winning roses have been left behind.
Upon arrival at your new home, let your computer “acclimate” itself to room temperature before plugging it in. They are temperamental little buggers.

There is nothing like having a garage sale to help make a little extra money and get rid of stuff at the same time. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone. To keep your sanity and to have a successful sale at the same time, keep in mind the following “advice”:
People go to garage sales for bargains. This isn’t Ebay! Ask yourself what you would honestly pay for the item at a garage sale. You may think it is worth $5 but chances are most people won’t pay more than 50 cents for it. Keep pricing simple. If you have alot of items you are selling for the same price. Put in a box or separate table together.
Hit the bank the day before and get lots of $1 and change. Beware of counterfeit bills. Overall people are honest but you would be surprised what gets passed on to the unsuspecting. You can purchase a counterfeiting pen at any office shop to mark the bills you receive. Make it a rule not to give more than $5 or $10 in change and post a sign saying so.You do not want to take a $50 bill for a $1 item.
Be prepared to haggle, especially towards the end of the day. Before you say no, ask yourself do you want to move this back in or haul it to the dump. Forget your pride if you find an offer insulting. Again, would you rather have a few bucks or spend more moving it back into the garage or hauling it to the dump.
Find out who your true friends are. Ask a few to assist your during the sale. Do in shifts so as to not monopolize their time. Have drinks (the adult type if you know what I mean) and food a plenty.
Remember what is junk to you is another man’s treasure. Boy oh boy, do I have a great deal of another man’s treasure in my house!

* Lock the truck while you are unloading if you aren’t going to be right back! Don’t forget to lock the house between trips to and from the truck if you plan to be outside of the house for any length of time. You never know who is watching.Things can happen to your belongings even in the best of neighborhoods.
* Place valuables in a safe deposit box until you get settled. This includes your silver, jewelry, etc.
* HIDE your purse!If in the car, make sure it is not visible.Keep your id and credit cards separate from your purse and hide them in a different location (even if in your car.).

There has been alot of advice on how to pack all of your different rooms. However, what if you have enough decorations for all of those birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, and other special occasions. I have enough Halloween decorations to fill up an entire closet! I packed all of the decorations separately in boxes and other packing containers that were color coded for the occasion. I even put stickers that coordinated with the theme on the containers. By knowing what special occasion these boxes/containers were for, I could leave them unpacked and stored in the attic, garage, or else where until they were needed. Hint, if you have candles (and I had lots), determine if it might be cheaper to replace. Don’t pack them with all of your other decorations. They are sensitive to heat and may melt or soften into a glob. Same goes for any other similar items.
